Seton Hall UniversitySeton Hall University is the oldest and largest Catholic university in New Jersey. It was founded in Madison in 1856 and shortly thereafter moved to its present location in South Orange. It is aptly described as “a home for the heart, the mind and the spirit.” Its Catholic roots have made the University home that is open to people of all faiths, creeds and colors.
The University continues to reflect the growing ethnic scope of its students and the increasing diversity of the Church and society it serves. One of the most important and far reaching events was the arrival of Monsignor John M. Oesterreicher at Seton Hall in 1953, after having preached and broadcast radio programs against the Nazis in Austria and Paris. This converted Jew, who never lost his love for the Jews, immediately began high-level serious discussions between Catholics and Jews about mutual understanding and concerns. This ultimately led to one of the most important and far-reaching documents of the Second Vatican Council; Nostra Aetate (In Our Time). The document proclaims that, in her task of promoting unity and love among men, indeed among nations, the Church considers above all what men have in common and what draws them to fellowship. In addition, Nostra Acetate proclaims that God holds the Jews most dear for the sake of their Fathers; He does not repent of the gifts He makes or of the calls He issues. Oesterreicher, part of the committee tasked with producing the document, was the lead author of Nostra Aetate. This task continues today in the Institute for Judeo-Christian Studies— which Oesterreicher founded — the Graduate Program in Jewish Christian Studies and the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish Christian Studies. These and many other aspects of Seton Hall attest to its commitment to Pax, Peace, Shalom and Salaam. Therefore, it is most appropriate that the University partner with the MidAtlanticOpera Company to produce a peace concert at Carnegie Hall titled “A Prayer for Peace. “This task continues today in the Institute for Judeo-Christian Studies— which Oesterreicher founded — the Graduate Program in Jewish Christian Studies and the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish Christian Studies.
